Today was a fabulous first day in 4th Grade at Weatherbee School. I feel so lucky to have students who are ready and eager to learn. In reading class, we learned all about how to get out our materials and put them away. Tomorrow we have set a goal that we will try to do this transition it ONE minute, it will be tough, but I know we can. After the routine stuff, I asked the students to imagine a world without books. As you can imagine some cheered, some booed, and others looked confused. That is when I pulled out the book Aunt Chip and the Great Triple Creek Dam Affair by Patricia Polacco. Here is a brief summary of the book from Patricia Polacco's website: "How much TV is too much TV? Welcome to Triple Creek, where the townspeople watch TV day and night. They watch it when they're eating, working, playing, and sleeping. They even use TVs to teach the kids at school. But when Eli's eccentric Aunt Chip (who refuses to own a TV) discovers that her nephew and her neighbors don't remember how to read, she pulls the plug on the whole town by using books that have been piled high to build a dam to spread the magic of reading all around." At the conclusion of the book I shared with them that it will be our goal for this school year for all of our students to find the love of reading and to find that one memorable book that changes everything for them. Can't wait for tomorrow's adventure! Here is a link to Patricia Polacco's website:http://www.patriciapolacco.com/books/chip/chip.html
