Our second unit for 4th grade is called Reading the Weather, Reading the World. We have begun the unit by thinking about our lives as nonfiction readers. We have explored what "types" of nonfiction reading we like to do. For example, magazines, cereal boxes, newspapers, websites, books, and lego instructions. We then did a partner "walk about" to explore the topics that we love to read about. (See the pictures below.) Our next focus will be reviewing the text features of nonfiction text. We will discuss how the text features teach us important things and they also get us ready to read the text. We also did a text features scavenger hunt with the nonfiction books and magazines from our classroom. Then we will focus on text structure. That is the way that the author writes the piece.
